Why Floridians placed so much hope in California

For those of you who have not studied history, you should still be superficially aware of the fact that it took more than ten years before the "civil rights" that were taken for granted in the rest of the states were actually enacted in fact in the south.

In spite of the fact that Fort Lauderdale has the third largest gay population in the United States, our seat of government is in what we refer to as "South Georgia". There is a saying in Florida: "The further north you go, the more "south" it gets."

While you in California already had domestic partnership benefits at a state level, and gay adoption, and perhaps had already achieved a "separate but equal" state of affairs for gay couples, we in Florida still had four laws on the books prohibiting gay marriage when they launched the Amendment 2 campaign.

While the wording of Prop 8 only wanted to protect the "word" marriage, our Amendment 2 was worded to prohibit "anything that resembles marriage". Still, the "Vote Yes on 2" campaign promised that they had no intention of trying to take away the "domestic partnership" benefits that were already in place with only a handful of "rogue" municipalities and counties.
